Back to School Illnesses and Beyond: Nebulizers for Asthma, Allergies and Cough and Cold Treatments

Now that the calendar has flipped over to September and the beginning of the school year is upon us, it is important to keep in mind that along with back to school comes back to school illnesses, as well as the triggering of potentially severe seasonal allergies. According to WebMD, the average American child catches between six and 10 colds per year. This is because when youth students are gathered together in schools, their immune systems simply cannot fend off all of the germs that surround them. Parents can only do so much to help prevent their children from getting a common cold, but even if your child is fully immunized and washes his or her hands throughout the school day, the chances are that at some point you will be calling your pediatrician to make an appointment.

For students who have asthma, suffer from seasonal allergies that kick up during the fall season or wind up getting sick with a cough and cold when they go back to school, the use of nebulizers to administer medication has become an important and effective treatment. For nebulizer medication and dosage, please consult your doctor.

You may be asking yourself, “What is a nebulizer and what are its benefits?” KidsHealth.org explains, “A nebulizer is an electrically powered machine that turns liquid medication into a mist so that it can be breathed directly into the lungs through a face mask or mouthpiece.” Meanwhile, the benefits to using a nebulizer for treatment include effective medication delivery directly to the respiratory tract, ease of use (just breathe normally as the medication flows continuously), and a lower risk of short-term side effects than when taking the same medicine orally. They can also be used for prevention.

For a child with a cough or cold that escalates into bronchitis or another severe respiratory illness, a nebulizer is ideal because the child doesn’t have to do anything except stay in the same place for 5 to 10 minutes and breathe while the full dose of medication passes through.
